Getting a book to
read for free in exchange for writing a review makes it hard to
remain the objectivism. I’m a straight forward person, what usually
makes the task even worse for me – I feel slightly obliged to omit
the minuses and to exaggerate the pluses. So, I took „Gwynneth Ever
After” with some tremor, hoping with all my heart that the book
would turn out to be really good and I would not have to go against
myself in this review. I even feared to read any other comments or
reviews in case I will make my opinion before even starting the first
page. And guess what? Wishes sometimes come true!
Speaking about
wishes, I would call „Gwynneth” a Cinderella type of story set up
in a modern world, but much more complicated and, as much as this
word may seem to be out of place here, realistic. Having a single
mother as my best friend gave me a better look at the main character:
a woman in her mid-thirties, raising up three small kids on her own
and still looking for the best in life, not giving up to surrender
and to depression.
But that’s not
all. Let’s not degrade this story only to the single-mother plot
and classify it as such. This novel would get to every girl or woman
who ever dreamt, even if only for small hours before falling asleep,
about meeting and talking, becoming friends or something more, with a
celebrity, be it an actor or a singer. It is nothing to be ashamed of
– or at least I think so. While reading this book, I did not think
about Gareth Connor per se – but about my “own” actor, and
somehow I managed to enrich my own fantasy with this book. It made me
smile through all the pages, and feel really optimistic and warm at
heart after I’ve finished.
It is written with
ease and fluency. The story flows on the pages, drawing the lives of
two completely different people, people with different problems. And
yet, there is something that connects them. The connection is not,
like in some novels of this kind, forced, infantile or illogical. No,
it’s fully consequent and does not repel with any kind of absurd
–as long as we do remember that it’s a fiction. Humour and drama,
bittersweet moments and childish pranks – you can find it all in
the book.
All
the girls out there who want to have a couple of hours of living
through a truly beautiful and modern tale – this is the book you’ve
been wishing for all along! So leave your problems out there and
indulge in the world where wishes do come true.
